IUSB Riverside Hall Renovation

When students at Indiana University South Bend returned to class this fall, they discovered a brand-new home for the expanded Health and Wellness Center and enhanced academic programs in Health Sciences within the completely renovated Riverside Hall. The ARTEKNA-designed project is the culmination of nearly twenty months of planning and construction, and includes a clinical teaching and research laboratory, radiology equipment for instructional and training purposes, a pharmacy, classrooms, offices, student resources, and new clinical space for both the Health and Wellness program and HealthLinc, a not-for-profit Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) serving uninsured and underinsured patients. The project also includes new mechanical, plumbing, electrical, data and security/access systems.

The planning concepts for this project included careful separation of students and patients, accommodating multiple diverse programmatic requirements from a single, shared lobby space, creating instructional space within and adjacent to a functioning healthcare clinic and how those disparate functions can share synergies and spaces without compromising privacy issues, and how to take advantage of the beautiful views to the adjacent St. Joseph River. In addition, careful study was required to fit the entirely new infrastructure into a 50-year old building envelope.
