Code/Regulatory Updates
Indiana Building Code: The new 2008 Indiana Building Code was made effective June 18, 2008. Guidelines for the Design and Construction of Hospitals and Health Care Facilities:
The 2001 Edition is currently in effect and is used by the State
Department of Health for licensure requirements. The 2006 Edition was
published but never adopted. A draft of the 2010 Edition has been
published. The public comment period for the 2010 Guidelines revision
cycle closed on December 31, 2008. The Health Guidelines Revision
Committee will meet in April 2009 to consider the comments submitted
and to finalize the content of the 2010 edition of the Guidelines.
There is a good chance that the 2010 Guidelines will be adopted at some
point after they are published.
Americans with Disabilities Act:
On January 21, 2009, the Department of Justice withdrew its draft final
rules to amend ADA. This means that existing ADA regulations remain in
place; however, the handicapped accessibility requirements in the 2008
Indiana Building Code are based on the proposed amendments to ADA.
ASHRAE 90.1-2007:
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, a stimulus package was
passed by the US Congress and signed into law by President Obama on
February 17, 2009. It mandates that states that want a share of the
energy assistance grants included in the bill meet or exceed the
provisions of ASHRAE 90.1-2007 for commercial buildings. Currently, the
vast majority of states follow an earlier version of the ASHRAE
standard. For a breakdown of state compliance, please click here.
If adopted by the state, the 2007 standard will have a significant
effect on how buildings are constructed. In Indiana, House Bill No.
1620 would require that the State Building Commission adopt the most recent edition of both the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and ASHRAE 90.1. |
